The Effects of a Child Group Art Therapy Program with Parent Education for Borderline Intelligent Children: Mental Health, Sociality, and Parenting Attitudes of the Parents

Abstract
This study investigates the effects of a child group therapy program with parent education for borderline intelligent children¡¯s mental health, sociality, and parenting attitude of their parents. The subjects were 20 couples of borderline intelligent children(7-9 years old) and mothers living in J city(experimental group: 10 couples, control group: 10 couples). The group art therapy program for the borderline intelligent children was practiced via total 20 sessions a week(1 session: 60 minutes), and the psychoeducation for the children¡¯s parents was practiced via total 20 sessions a week(1 session: 60 minutes). The main results are as follows. First, withdrawl, anxiety and depression, social immaturity, thought problem, attention problem, rule-breaking behavior, and aggressive behavior of the children of experimental group tended to decrease and decreased more than control group. Second, the mothers of experimental group children showed more positive parenting attitude than them of control group. Third, sociality and teacher-student relationships of the children of experimental group changed positively. The limitations of the study and future tasks are discussed.
